It is the dream of everyone to live a healthy, active and happy life. What we eat and what we obtained from the food consumed by us plays a vital role in this. In other sense we can say food and nutrition is very essential for survival growth of human beings. If they are not chosen wisely, they can lead to a number of health problems and risks. Before moving forward to understand benefits and functions of food and nutrition, it is good to understand what Food and Nutrition actually is.
 
Food is substance which is generally obtained from plant or animals, a combination of very rich and complex chemicals, helps in sustaining the body. It actually contains carbohydrates, proteins, water, fat, and other nutrition like vitamins and minerals. They collectively help body to grow, sustain and repair itself.
 
Composition of food:
Food is composed of several chemicals substances, major of them are:
1. Water
2. Fats
3. Protein
4. Minerals
5. Vitamins
6. Carbohydrates
7. Roughage (Dietary Fibres)

Food also contains colour & flavour, pharmacologically active substances like steroids, caffeine etc. Its chemical nature changes with the method of preservation and cooking.
Nutrition is the science of study of work done by food consumed by us. This study deals with finding the effects of varies nutrients over the growth and maintenance of body and their effect over functionality of different organs.
It can be defined as 3 phase process through which the food consumed by us passes. They are:
1. Consumption
2. Digestion
3. Circulation
Nutrition word is derived from Latin word ‘nutritionem and nutrire,’ which means “Nourishment” or “To nourish”. There is a saying that “We are what we eat”. Therefore knowledge of nutrients and getting them from the food we eat in right combinations plays a very vital role in living a healthy life. This knowledge will also help in prevention from today’s most common diseases like obesity, diabetes and also some of the chronic diseases.

Nutrition keeps on working our throughout life span, stating from birth to childhood, adolescence to adulthood, and in old age, where it can be a real antidote for diseases related to old age. Food therapy is emerging as an alternative medicine, as it is proven now that body can heal itself provided it gets right substance which is being needed by it.
